Joe Paterno was fired as head coach of Penn St's football team. Why? He knew something most people didn't know. Jerry Sandusky, one of Paterno's coaches, raped several boys years ago. One of the witnesses told Paterno. Paterno told higher authority. Nothing was done about it...
Now as tragic as this is, I don't see why Paterno has been receiving all of the criticism. Was he the only one who knew about it? No. Did he inform higher authority? Yes. I haven't heard too much criticism of the witness. Why did HE not tell the police? Why did HE allow this to go unreported? Paterno is getting all of the criticism because of his fame. What fame did the witness have? Not too much... When it comes to scandals, people love it when it involves celebrities. They don't care if it's some random guy on the street.
But back to Paterno getting fired. Was it really necessary? Did it solve anything? NO! Paterno announced he would be retiring at the end of the season. He also apologized for not doing more than he was legally obliged to do. Yeah, he reported the rapes to higher authority. He did the minimum. But apparently the minimum wasn't enough... Now he's out of a job.
